Student Innovator, Biotechnology Researcher (Markham, Canada)
I’m Patricia Rea. I’ve just graduated Grade 8 and I’m a Junior Editor of Zero to Genetic Engineering Hero by Dr. Justin Pahara and Julie Legault, a biotechnology handbook being used by many iGEM teams. This year I engineered yeast to express Antifreeze Proteins and did freeze testing to test survival in the extreme temperatures of Mars. I was a featured panelist at Metamorphosis 2019, one of Ontario’s largest STEM conferences. At Metamorphosis I also led a hands-on protein folding workshop. I volunteer with Markham, Ontario’s youth-led outreach group STEM Kids Rock, and achieved 1st place at the 2019 Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute Science Fair. I won a Silver Medal at Canada’s 2019 national science fair, where I also received the Discovery Award for the country’s top junior research project and the Excellence in Astronomy Award. This September I’ll be part of Team Canada at MILSET Sciences Expo International.
